2D Sonic Sequel Announced!

You'd think he'd be holding up 4 fingers...

After years of arguably misguided experimentation in the 3D realms, sometimes with adaquate results… other times dreadful, Sega is finally returning the blue hedgehog to his original 2D roots with the announcement of Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1!

I must say I am hesitant to admit to being absolutely ecstatic about this announcement (even though, deep down… I am) due to being repeatedly burned by announcements like this by Sega in the past. I recall seeing preliminary screenshots of Sonic Unleashed showing a return to 2D platforming with updated graphics and thinking, “Hell yes! Sega has finally realized that Sonic fans just want that classic super fast platforming action and don’t care about all the gimmicks and crazy side characters.” Then, for some asinine reason that is far beyond my ability to comprehend, they saw fit to turn Sonic into a… Werehog.

Hopefully, everyone at Sega that thought this was a good idea has since been fired.

Dreadful… just dreadful. Another thing that concerns me is the “Episode 1” in the title. All I can say is that considering how long Sonic fans have waited for this, the length of the game had better be the equivalent of any of the original Sonic games (1, 2, 3, or “& Knuckles”) with the “Episode 1” referring only to the fact that it is the first chapter of a much larger story arc. That, or it had better be the most intense white-knuckle thrill ride Sonic experience fans have ever had. Otherwise, Sega will again have a lot of pissed off fans to deal with… and nobody wants that… least of all Sega, I’m sure.

They're calling it Sonic 4! Sega can't possibly screw this up... can they?!

I suppose we can only wait now and see if Sega can truly live up to the already tremendous expectations that have been heaved upon this game. Come on, Sega… show me some of that old Genesis magic

I’m really curious to hear what everyone else thinks about all this Sonic 4 business. Check out the official Sonic 4 website link below, then leave me a quick comment on your thoughts. Who knows… I may even comment on your comment!
